master musicians demonstrating the lessons in the context of tunes. Eliminating
first the solos on one disc and finally the melodies on a third disc leaving

Charlie Mariano has been involved with South Indian (Carnatic) music since 1967. This book presents some basic information about the 72 scales (melakartas) that are the parent scales from which all ragas are derived. It also includes the Tala which serves as a highly developed rhythmic system as well as authentic Indian practice exercises, tunes and a list of suggested recordings.
This CD (including music booklet) has not especially been worked out for the use in musical education. It is, on the contrary, an audio CD which has been recorded for sale as a trio CD. Mixing the recordings at the studio, however, gave us the idea to offer this CD Legal Paradizer also as a play along CD. The structure of none of the pieces is, for instance, as simple as that of the tunes on some other play along CDs. Therefore a short explanation and/or comment is provided on every piece in order to make it easier for the student to follow the road map of the tunes. Additionally, some explanation of stylistic features has been given to help with the interpretation of the individual pieces. Strong emphasis is placed on the different “grooves” of the pieces. In most of the pieces, the player does not necessarily have to follow the changes; but rather develop simple ideas “in time.”
This is designed for individual singers, classroom students and teachers of vocal jazz. The levels range from beginning through advanced and can also be beneficial to all musicians regardless of instrument for developing jazz articulation and learning to connect what is heard and played.
The CD contains examples by Darmon Meader, Don Shelton, Michele Weir, John Clayton and Joe LaBarbera. Also included is a section of interviews by singers such as Kevin Mahogany, Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan, Jon Hendricks, Kurt Elling and others.
This book also presents chapters on jazz theory and keyboard, a glossary and a list of selected solos for transcription. This serves as an excellent resource of information for any jazz musician.
What new songs/material are you working on? Can you "talk down"
arrangements easily and briefly? Do you vocalize everyday? How do you work on
improvisation? Do you have good promo material? When is your next
performance?
These and other topics along with a CD and examples are included. It serves as a
practical guide for learning and teaching the art of singing.
This book includes special exercises for:
In a special section on "Studio Work", Jon West, who owns a London recording studio, gives an account of current studio technology and describes the singer's work in the studio.

Biography extract: Motionless in his dressing room, he sits back in an armchair, a barely-touched glass of whisky in front of him. He smooths down the front of his flowered shirt, watches as his friends bustle around him. He smiles. In his mind he is already moving down the corridor that leads to the stage. Stephane Grappelli is ready. It is time to take the violin out of its case.

This book is a masterpiece! Kurt Dietrich has already
established his reputation as an authority on jazz with his excellent book on
the trombonists of the Duke Ellington orchestra, “Duke’s ’Bones”, Ellington’s
Great Trombonist.”
His work in this wonderful collection of history, anecdotes, and stories is
extremely well researched and documented. He traces the history of jazz trombone
from its early inception through the big band era, bebop, new music, european,
world music, up to the present. One of the strengths of this book is his
inclusion of many lesser-know trombonists – some of whom were “monsters” albeit
overlooked. Although a serious document, “jazz ’bones” is very enjoyable
reading.
“Jazz ’bones” will certainly take its place alongside the best volumes on music
history and is without question required reading for all trombonists and lovers
of jazz. Bravo, Kurt Dietrich!" (Jiggs Whigham)
"Insightful commentary on jazz pedagogy...a serious approach to the study of
jazz."
(Ellis Marsalis)
"Jerry Coker has covered every possible aspect of the subject and we, educators and
students alike can all benefit from his insights."
(Dan Haerle)
