NEW WAYS OF BRAZILIAN DRUMMING Sergio Gomes (80 page book
w/CD) $27.95
New Ways of Brazilian Drumming presents a contemporary vision regarding
Brazilian rhythms for drumset, including history and percussion scores of those
rhythms, from the traditional patterns to the new concept of “Brazilian Claves”
The 96 tracks CD showcases all rhythms and several exercises, besides a samba
and a maracatu play-along, providing everything a musician of any country needs
in order to develop an authentic Brazilian musical language.
Since my first trip to Brazil in 1992 until now, I have seen firsthand the
great enthusiasm that Sergio Gomes has for taking his native Brazilian folk
rhythms, orchestrating them on the drumset, and sharing this knowledge with
students. This book is a concise, easy to follow extension of that enthusiasm. I
know it will be invaluable to those of us who love the music of Brazil but still
find it mystifying. Thank You Sergio! – John Hollenbeck
ODD METER CLAVE FOR DRUMSET-Expanding the Rhythmic language
of Cuba
Conor Guilfoyle - (80 page book with CD) $24.95
Odd Meter Clave for Drumset uses a unique approach to odd time signatures,
taking the tried and tested rhythms of Cuba and adjusting them to fit various
meters. Beginning with an in depth study of the various claves and their
qualities, moving on to the basic rhythms in 4/4 which are the templates for
their odd meter counterparts. The odd meter section is divided into 3 chapters,
clave in 5, 7 and 9. In each section there is an analysis of odd meter pulse,
the clave and their relationship. The student then builds the rhythms of Mambo,
Songo, Guaguanco, Mozambique etc. to fit the new claves. These rhythms work on
many different levels, as odd meter learning tools, as co-ordination studies or
just great sounding grooves. Finally there is a chapter on building your own
claves. Here we see some of the possible permutations that can be created by
combining and adjusting claves, allowing the student to create original claves
on which to build their own unique patterns. With over 300 examples this unique
book/CD opens a world of new possibilities, built on a deep musical tradition.
"Conor has done a superb job of basing his adaptations on the bedrock of
tradition. What’s even better is that this book is not just for drummers and
percussionists. Indeed, it is a treasure trove of great adaptations in odd
meters of Afro-Cuban rhythms to the kit – but this book will also inspire
bassists, pianists and most of all composers and arrangers who are looking for
something completely different. Bravo!!!"
Bobby Sanabria (Multi-Grammy nominated drummer, percussionist, bandleader and
educator)
“Conor has addressed a topic that is in the forefront of contemporary drumming.
By analyzing odd meter from a different vantage point than the norm, he is in
essence describing the intersection of the worlds of Latin and Indian rhythmic
concepts – how the clave and the tal combine in theory and practicality, way
beyond surface and obvious characteristics. It is important that all
instrumentalists who profess to be up on current trends read this book.”

BRAZILIAN CONGA Gilson De Assis (128 page book w/CD)
Brazilian Conga opens the door to familiar and to new worlds for the devotees of
a fantastic instrument: the Brazilian atabaque with its rhythms adapted to the
conga. You will meet some "old acquaintances" among the typical basic grooves of
Brazilian music for 1 conga or timbau (Samba de Caboclo, Barravento, Ijexá or
Congo) but also relatively unknown rhythms for 2 or 3 congas, Brazilian rhythms
originally not destined to be performed on the atabaque and even modern "pop“
rhythms. Additionally, the method provides coordination exercises and a number
of pieces for small percussion ensembles.
This book by Gilson de Assis with its accompanying CD, which offers recordings
of all the individual grooves, will surely be of great help to both the novice
and the experienced percussionist. It will not only lead you to a better
understanding of the playing techniques and structures but also help you capture
the feeling and prepare the ground for a correct interpretation of the Brazilian
atabaque rhythms. Text: english/spanish/german

Exploration in Rhythm, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation will develop
and expand the rhythmic palette and vocabulary of the improviser and composer.
Working on these concepts, players should begin to “hear” rhythms that “float
over the barline” as well as develop the ability to execute phrases over longer
periods of time. The end result will be a sonic erasing of the bar line and an
enhanced sense of freedom with regard to rhythm and phrasing.
Finally, a comprehensive and organized approach to getting out of the eighth
note rut – valuable advice from Ed Saindon on how to vary one’s rhythmic
approach. David Liebman, saxist, educator, author, composer
